Update on 42 Bloomsbury Street

We had a problem (unresolved) yesterday with the Wi-Fi connection. I must admit that I don't really understand what happened but all I know is that it isn't working on three of the floors. Hmmm.

The building doesn't feel like a school yet because there are no people in it. We need the noise at break time, a busy office with lots of questions, teachers preparing lessons... then 42 Bloomsbury will become a school.

Here's a photo of one of the classrooms to show you how bright the rooms are. The building you can see out the window is the British Museum! This isn't the most exciting photo but in a couple of weeks this will be a full classroom...I hope!

Moving news....

The latest news on the move to the new school building is that all the furniture has been delivered and the cabling for the computers has been completed.
We need some time to get each classroom ready now (putting up the whiteboards etc) and then we need to set up all the computers and phone system and then.... we'll be ready to open the door and welcome our students. I can't wait!

So, if you are an old student - please check you have the right address and come to visit us in our new home next time you are in London. We love visits!

If you are a new student... we know you will love the new school and have a fantastic learning experience.

I'm going to spend today opening packages and moving furniture... tomorrow I will probably report that I have a bad back!! If any volunteers want to come and help me............

Aprendiz 4 - Pedro Frazao

I've had a message from Paulo Frazao that his brother Pedro is one of the contestants in the television programme The Apprentice (Aprendiz) in Brazil.

Both Pedro and Paulo were students at this school and so I am going to follow the story closely to see how well he does. The series started yesterday and there is a possibility that he has already been sent home.

Pedro was great fun at school - very bright and full of energy and I'm sure he will do very well. If he does, then I have some good stories to sell to the Brazilian newspapers about his time in London... (don't worry Pedro, your secrets are safe!).

A Cultural Experience...

Language in London (Camden College of English) is becoming famous for its Cultural Experience course, where we use museums and galleries as the classroom for learning English.

However, this week two of our wonderful teachers, Ashleigh and Rebecca, took a group of students to discover a different cultural experience...


They went to Walthamstow Stadium to watch dog racing!

The group spent the evening drinking pints of beer, eating fish and chips and betting on the races (and looking at the smiles in the photo, I think there were quite a few winners).

Blogs, MySpace, Orkut, Skype, Wiki ... aaargh!!!

Sometimes there's so much technology to worry about that I forget I am supposed to be running a school.

When I'm not updating this blog, I'm making changes to our current site www.camdencollege.com or preparing the text for our new site www.languageinlondon.com (not online yet!). Then I have to update our Myspace and Orkut Language in London site.

A few years ago we became the first school in the UK to invite students (old and new) to chat online with MSN messenger (info@camdencollege.com). This is a great tool because it gives potential students the opportunity to get immediate answers and helps them to decide which course to take or accommodation to book.

Then we introduced Skype (camdencollegeofenglish), so that students could give us a ring at an time... for free. This has been very popular.

And don't forget that you can also find us in Wikipedia!

With all this technology, the one thing that remains the same is that we still need to have great teachers and make sure the lessons are interesting and useful. Some traditions are worth keeping!

Not really about English...

I thought I would take a break from posting about the school and share my favourite photo (not including pictures of my little son!).
This is the Chelsea team when I started to support them... a long time ago. Looking at the familiar faces you can see that they played because they loved the game and not for the money. I miss those days!

What a location!

I spent this morning at 42 Bloomsbury Street because work started today on building the Internet Cafe for our students. Hopefully, everything will be finished by the end of next week... HOPEFULLY!

As I seem to spend every minute of the working day running from Camden to Bloomsbury, worrying about the cost of everything and stressed because of the time the work is taking... I decided to spend half an hour in the British Museum (which, as you now know, is less than a minute from the location of the new school Language in London).

I had a look at the exhibition on the Enlightenment and then spent some time in Africa and Asia. Visitors to London often complain about the cost of everything but they forget that we have some of the best museums and galleries in the world... and most of them are free!

British Council Prize Winner!

Congratulations to Zuzana Kupcova, who has won a competition in Slovakia organised by the British Council.

Her prize is a two week course at Language in London (Camden College of English) on our wonderful Cultural Experience course (the one where all the lessons take place in London's museums and galleries).

She'll be here in the summer and hopefully will have a fantastic time (and learn a lot of English).

So... maybe everyone should enter a competition today... it's the only way to win.

The move...

Latest news about our move from Camden to Bloomsbury is that... we're not there yet!!!

Unfortunately, things are taking a little longer than expected. The cabling (so that we can have a modern internet cafe for the students) is the latest delay... but don't worry, we will be there soon.

Everyone who sees the building thinks it's wonderful so I am confident we will have the best language school in London very soon.

England, Ireland and Canada meet...

The last two days have been very interesting and enjoyable. As you may know, Camden College of English is a member of Tandem International, which is a group of language schools around the world that shares similar ideas. There are schools in Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Chile where you can learn the language of the country - and all the schools are independent and have a high quality.
This week, the English group met to discuss a million and one things. As owners of schools from Canada (Montreal and Toronto), Ireland (Dublin) and England (Totnes and London) we talked about teaching, courses, marketing and helping our students.
We are also working on a plan for a very special course where students can study in more than one of our schools.... more news about this to follow soon.

Greenwich...

As Friday was a Bank Holiday and the school was closed, we took a group of students to Greenwich for the day.

The sun was shining and we started with an hour's cruise down the River Thames and then had a picnic in the park.

Greenwich is an interesting place because of GMT and the history of sea, space and time. There is so much to see here!

I have been taking students on trips for many years but this is the first time that Ben, my little boy, joined. You can just see him in this picture on the left.

It was also a special day because two old students, Gloria and Ricard from Barcelona, came with us. They were students at Camden College of English in 1998 (and I was their teacher) but this time they were here on holiday with their little son Marcel. So it was a great family occasion.

Chairs and exams

The school (the one we are going to leave soon) is getting full at the moment... with chairs! A number of different companies have sent us samples so that we can test them before deciding what to order for the new school. They're all comfortable but I want something that doesn't really look or feel like it belongs in a school. I will sit on them all tomorrow and then decide!

This evening I will be teaching the CPE (Cambridge Proficiency) class. It's good to spend time in the classroom otherwise all I do is administration in order to run the school. I'm probably at my happiest when I'm teaching...

The new school - a good morning!

Lots of my time at the moment is spent planning the move to our new building. This morning I was choosing furniture... of course our students will need somewhere to sit. Two of the classrooms will only have sofas and beanbags so that they are a very relaxing place for conversation practice.

I think it will take 4 weeks to get everything organised and then we'll be ready.

A lovely day in London...

For a few minutes today I forgot about the world of teaching English, running a school teaching English, moving the school to a new building to continue teaching English....

I was in central London this morning for a meeting at the British Council offices and, as usual, I was early (I'm always early!). The sun was shining and I was standing in Trafalgar Square with my camera like a tourist...

We're on the move!

Yes!!!!

Today (Friday) at 1100, I signed the contract to move the school to a new building. This is very exciting and I will post more news about it next week... including photos.

The building is very near the British Museum (a perfect location!) and will be a wonderful place to study.

The Summer Solution

We have spent a long time trying to find a solution for our summer students...

They (maybe... you!!) usually come to London for 1 - 4 weeks and want to make the most of studying English and enjoying all the tourist and social attractions of this great city.

Some students come to class tired in the morning because of late nights so...

Our idea for summer 2007 is to have a mixed timetable with some morning and some afternoon lessons. This will give all our students the chance to study and visit museums, go clubbing and do everything they want.

Innovation in English teaching

Last year, Camden College of English became the first school in the world to win the British Council's prize for innovation in English language teaching.

This year, I was a judge on the panel for the 2007 awards.

The results were announced last night (01 March), at a wonderful ceremony in London. Many of the most important people in the world of English teaching - academics, course book writers, educators - gathered at the Delfina gallery for a very enjoyable evening.

I would like to congratulate the winners on their success - you can read more about them here.

The British Council describe this as the "Oscars" of English teaching - maybe it's not as glamorous but it certainly means a lot to those who win!

If you want to try something different and innovative then you could join our prize winning course this summer. We only accept 12 students each week, so book early.

Back in dear old England...

What a fantastic holiday!

Greta and I took Ben to Argentina and Uruguay to see his grandparents and we only checked emails from the school everyday! We still managed to have a good rest and enjoy the wonderful weather and food but... Camden College of English was still in our minds.

I want to give a big blog welcome (back) to Rob Tunnell, who is the new Director of Studies at the school. Rob was a teacher at the school for a few years before going travelling and studying more about English as a Foreign Language. We're very pleased to have him back with us at Camden.

At the moment we are all getting ready for the big move to our new building... this is very exciting and I hope to give you more news next week.

A little advertising... our very popular evening courses (General English, Cambridge exams, IELTS preparation, English for Work) are starting again in March and April. Places are very limited so book now!

And finally... congratulations to Chelsea on beating Arsenal in the Carling Cup Final. Come on you blues!!

It's my turn!

As Principal of a language school in London, I meet students from all over the world every day. They come to England to take an English course and have a fantastic experience. Sometimes I forget how wonderful it is to be a tourist in another country... where everthing is new and interesting.

For the next two weeks I will be on holiday in Argentina and Uruguay... eating the best beef in the world and playing on the beach with Benjamin, my one-year old son.

I'll try not to think about everyone working in London!
